Digital identities: Recommendations for action from our BundesIdent project

In 2022, we began working on the topic of digital identities on behalf of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community (BMI). Our common goal: to integrate the online ID function (eID) more strongly into the everyday lives of citizens. In the first phase of the project, we examined the obstacles and hurdles that stood in the way of using the eID at the time. Building on this, we developed possible solutions in the second project phase and were able to test the BundesIdent app we developed in a real application for around eight months.

We would like to share the most important findings from the project – and the resulting recommendations for further action in the area of digital identities – in this blog post.

Dr. Anna Sinell

joined the DigitalService team as a project lead in January 2022. Throughout her professional life, she has been dedicated to the question of what effective mechanisms are needed to ensure that ideas do not remain theoretical but are actually implemented in society. Her focus has been on innovation systems – first in research at Fraunhofer, then at the Google Future Workshop, and most recently at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. She is now applying her experience to what she considers perhaps the most interesting innovation process: legislation. In her spare time, she was once a passionate field hockey player, but today it is her three children who keep her on her toes.

Carolin Bednarz

has been a Product Manager at DigitalService from November 2020 to December 2023 and was one of the first 15 employees. Before that, she took part in the Tech4Germany fellowship as a product fellow and has already gained professional experience in the field of digital transformation & strategy at Commerzbank and as a co-founder of Start@BlueFactory Berlin. She recharges her batteries during excursions in the VW bus with her partner.

Stephanie Kaiser

is CPO at DigitalService. She previously made a name for herself as co-founder of three startups and has been a member of the German government's Digital Council since 2018. In 2015 and 2016, she was voted among the "50 most inspiring Women in Tech in Europe." When she's not working, you can find her cycling or scooting on Berlin's streets. To her own surprise, it's the place she's returned to again and again, although Paris, Ho Chi Minh City, Warsaw and Milan were also beautiful places to live.
