Three months engineering fellow at Tech4Germany: I would have liked to know that beforehand

Tech4Germany is interdisciplinary, cross-domain, user-oriented – all well and good. But what do you do as an Engineering Fellow for three months? I asked myself the same question a year ago. I've since taken part in the fellowship – so here's the post I wish I'd read back then. I worked in the Bundestag project team and redesigned a tool that is used to distribute resources such as speaking time or committee chairs proportionally among the parliamentary groups. There was a second Engineering Fellow in my team alongside me. We quickly understood: yes, you write code – but not just code.

Chris Schmitz

was 2021 engineering fellow in the Bundestag project team. As a Master's graduate in Data Science with a Bachelor in Political Science, he is interested in political tech topics such as AI regulation, innovation policy and, of course, administrative digitization. According to his co-fellow David, Chris' entertainment factor comes not from the quality but the quantity of his jokes.
