From Tech4Germany to DigitalService – from student initiative to federal GmbH

What started in 2018 as a student initiative with big goals is now an organization that is driving forward the digitalization of the federal administration as a federal limited liability company with two fellowship programmes and a software development unit. We are often asked how we managed to set up the program in three years, scale it up, spin it off and ultimately make it permanent with DigitalService4Germany GmbH. Time to take a look back.

We launched Tech4Germany three years ago with the following goals: (1) to give student developers, designers and product managers an opportunity to get involved in the digitalization of public administration and (2) to make it possible for the federal administration to experience how agile and user-centric software development leads to better digital solutions.

While in this part I will talk about how we have developed the program over the last few years, another part about our insights and learnings will follow soon.

A portrait photo of Sonja Anton in the DigitalService office

Sonja Anton

is one of the co-founders of DigitalService and most recently supported the team as Chief of Staff. Before she previously led the Tech4Germany fellowship program, in which she participated in 2018, she advised the public sector at Capgemini. In the office, Sonja preferred to walk around barefoot and liked to write such articles over a glass of Aperol Spritz. The next challenge she is pursuing is earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Stanford University Graduate School of Business in California.
